A molar is a grinding tooth found at the back of a mammal’s mouth.

The word derives from the Latinmolaris dens, which literally means “grinding tooth”.

This itself stems frommola, the Latin for millstone.

It has nothing to do with the small burrowing mammal, although interestingly, moles do have molars.
