Others to watch are Dune Awakening,Light No Fire, andOutward2.

The last I checked David Tennant is in it?

The Long Dark

The Long Darks vast, snow-blanketed wilderness is a harsh and uncompromising place.

Getting ready to leave the shelter feels like planning a wilderness expedition.

Theres still occasionally time to play the part of tourist, however.

Project Zomboids obsessively detailed simulation deserves top billing.

Take vehicles, for instance; theyre a recent addition, and they pretty much function like real cars.

This is a game where a little scratch can ultimately kill you.

Its the best kind of permadeath.

V Rising

V Risingis a survival game with a hint of MMORPG and made by theBattleritedevs.

However, it’s very much got its own bloody flavour.

The player aims a bow at a T-Rex, as three others close in with spears and bows.

Being top-down, you’ve got this MOBA-style combat, combined with servers that support up to 40 players.

If you needed any more convincing, check out ourV Rising reviewfor more in-depth thoughts.

It’s survival as Henry David Thoreau imagined it, rather than Bear Grylls.

There are literal bears, though, among the game’s few threats.

There are also difficulty prefs, that let you fill your boots with poison mushrooms if you wish.

Sons Of The Forest

This spot was originally taken by this game’s predecessor,The Forest.

So your challenge becomes a) survive on this forested island.

Walk among the peaceful trees and enjoy the soothing sounds of the river.

Oh, there’s another one on the path up ahead.

Fortunately, Raft isn’t just about defending your newfound home from the terrors of the deep.

A vampire fends off bandits in V Rising.

And goodness is there a lot of flotsam swimming about in Raft.

Its a survival RPG thats laced with psychological horror.

And you wont learn anything at all if you get sick or become malnourished.

Theres a consequence to everything you do in Pathologic, though it’s not always apparent.

The whole game is a gloomy, ethical conundrum.

It’s all designed to lull you into a false sense of security.

A screenshot of UnReal World, a complicated and old-fashioned survival game.

You think, “Yeah, those traps will do the trick” when you hunker down at night.

The game throws a swarm at you and all hell breaks loose.

It’s classic zombie movie mistakes 101.

You should have known better, and yet you fall intotheirtrap every single damn time.

There are so many demands, but so few problems you’re able to solve at once.

Terrible things happen out there.

Guilt and shame can weigh on survivors, making them lose their appetite and even their will to live.

With its more intimate perspective, its also quite a bit more effective than Frostpunk.

Astroneer

PlayingAstroneermakes us incredibly happy.

A screenshot from Raft showing a shark climbing aboard a wooden platform.

Rather than a rugged survivalist, youre a scientist, studying new worlds and developing research outposts.

Even without the struggle, Astroneer has plenty of momentum.

Eventually, though, you’ll realise just how far you’ve come.

It takes a while to get there, of course, but theres so much to do in between.

Its a pretty lively place.

We must confess that we typically play on the casual difficulty.

It means you dont have to worry about hunger, and there are no additional penalties for death.

Hunger can drive a survival game, but Starbound doesnt have the scarcity to make starvation a meaningful problem.

Its just a nuisance.

Even without hunger, there are other survival concerns.

Acid rain, extreme temperatures, hostile aliens - theres no dearth of ways to die.

Darkwood

Darkwoodis so thick with dread that you almost have to wade through the forest.

A screenshot showing a bright, colourful alien landscape in Astroneer.

Eventually, your barricades will be smashed into splinters.

You cant trust the Darkwood, or the people who dwell within it.

I mean, how often is it you get to live a bug’s life, eh?

And that’s an intimidating feeling.

Even your own mind can become an enemy, summoning shadowy hallucinations whose attacks are all too real.

Rust

Getting started inRustcan be a bit of a pain in the arse.

A screenshot showing a dark, top-down forest scene from Darkwood.

Once you’re able to protect yourself, though, Rusts appeal becomes more apparent.

From the beginning to now, one of those experiences has been survival.

As you may have guessed, the game isn’t like a Call Of Duty or Apex Legends.

Grounded characters standing in the dirt near a giant baseball while staring at the player, with the player giving them a thumbs up.

It all gives our humble camp a sense of ambition beyond pure self-interest.

This land could provide for people, we think.

If we can protect it, maybe we could start to change things.

Welp, we guess we have enemies now, gang.

Best head back home and figure out how to survive this, too.

Its not for the faint of heart.

Frostpunk

Its hard to feel proud of a decision inFrostpunk.

To achieve this, your people need warmth and food, but thats easier said than done.

Purgatory is actually quite nice early on, at least.

With shelter, NPC chums and workstations, youll be able to make increasingly more ambitious expeditions.

The further into it you get, the more wild it becomes.

Its a harsh place, and keeping them alive takes a lot of work.

The elaborate simulation means that surviving amounts to more than just keeping colonists well-fed.

And what if that colonist is also the only doctor?

Everything from stress to unseasonably hot weather can spell doom for your colony.

There are just so many wildly different paths to take.

Its mindbogglingly open, and even after poring countless hours into it, weve only scraped the surface.
