Welcome to the final part ofElectric Nightmares, a short series about generative AI and games.

What does it take for a new technology to take root in our lives?

Credibility is about howgoodthe thing is, the desire to actually have it in the first place.

A CRT screen in the centre reads ‘Electric Nightmares Part 4: A Short Distance Ahead’. Behind it is a collage of people in AR headsets looking amazed. They have weird hands.

Comfort is about howeasilyyou can integrate into your life.

Generative AI hasnt really settled yet.

Is it easy or difficult to use?

In some ways, its quite easy.

It worked because it was simple, specific and reliable.

Today, AI Dungeon sitswith Mixed reviews on Steam.

A sample story from AI Dungeon telling part of the story of a human cyborg named Alaya. Apparently you have a palace?

AI Dungeon is a good demonstration of how the dream of a new AI product sours over time.

Theres anecdotal evidence that many of these modelsdegrade over timeas they are iteratively trained on user interactions, too.

That doesnt mean generative AI is useless or doomed.

I dont even think it means it cant be applied ethically.

Generative AI hasnt quite yet proven its comfort or credibility to either game developers or players yet.

It remains to be seen if it will suffer the same fate as VR or, worse, NFTs.
