Valheim details customisable difficulty settings and a sort-of creative mode

The options include both a creative mode (a la Minecraft) and a more ‘immersive’ option. The presets include the difficulty options youd expect. But there are some funkier options present too. Hammer mode seems like Valheims version of a creative mode. Are your ready for hardcore mode in#Valheim? ..or do you prefer something more chill?Note: Actual configs are not final! Its essentially the perfect mode for a virtual hike, letting you soak in Valheims soothing blockiness....

The Crucial T700 shows the promise, and limits, of PCIe 5.0 SSDs

That ‘only’ promises up to 10000MB/s reads and 9500MB/s writes yeesh, what a slowpoke. Compatibility is also a much trickier issue than with PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 drives. Using an older CPU, or lower-specced motherboard chipset? Then any PCIe 5.0 SSD you install will, at best, run at 4.0 speeds. At least the reward for all that handiwork is, in certain conditions, some truly next-generation performance. Unfortunately, most actual read/write tasks your SSD performs are not dealing with neat, sequentially stored data....

The first CRPG is a min-maxing hell you can- break

Its also a precursor to GarriottsUltimaseries, introducing many elements that formed the core of the following games. It doesnt slowly drop your health, it doesnt cause negative effects, it just kills you. But theres at least one element of Akalabeth that is still relevant today. There' s no playing Akalabeth just like they did in 1979; its too late for that. What youcando is break it, as they did in 1979....

The Last Of Us Part 1's "in-progress" mod reimagines the game as a beautiful FPS

Despite playing on Grounded, the video makes it seem pretty easy. The games gorgeous lighting and environmental design somehow look even crisper in first-person. Darker torchlit sections have a creepy Metro-esque effect, making you stalk through corridors step-by-step. Otherwise, the games outdoor greenery would comfortably fit inside a cosy walking sim, no problem. Hopefully, therell be a mod for that too. Apart from that, though, the game looks perfectly readable from this new perspective....

The procedurally generated serial killer in Shadows Of Doubt is too smart for me

See, the cases in Shadows Of Doubt are completely procedurally generated. Even the killer will change each time a new city is generated. It all begins with something straight out of a Bogart movie. A note slipped under the door to my apartment read ‘Find Omni Johnsson’, and nothing else. Just another day in the glamourous life of a PI. Going out into the night, the city is visually impressive....

The Thaumaturge is a detective RPG that's part Divinity: Original Sin, part evil Pokémon

But actually clapping eyes on it in person at GDC? The Thaumaturge had my full attention. My hands off GDC demo begins right at the start of the game during the prologue. (Or at least I think he’ll use them for good. Telling you where to go isn’t the only thing Wiktor’s perception ability is good for, either. It’s not long before we get to see Wiktor and Upyr in action either....

Shardpunk: Verminfall is a mashup of Darkest Dungeon, XCOM and Skaven

It’s got turn-based tactical combat against rats with magic rifles in a steampunk world already in ruins. It’s got the need to keep on moving, lest an approaching rat horde overwhelm you. It’s got bunkers in which your party rests, de-stresses, and tools up before moving on. Kind of a Fallouty, XCOMy, FTLy, Vermintidey mix, then - which together seems very cool. It’s out now, and there’s a demo. If it is, the full game is 10/$12....
