Ourbest SSDs for gamingguide includes recommendations for both.

Time to pin it down and secure it in place.

There are two common mechanisms for securing the SSD at this point.

An NVMe SSD being fastened into its M.2 slot by a small screwdriver.

In the latter case, use your most diminutive screwdriver to remove it first.

Use a medium screwdriver to remove one.

Step 2:Using the screws that came with your case, attach the SSD to this mount.

PC cases vary in how exactly the hard drive comes to rest in this cage.

Others may use removeable trays, but need the HDD to be secured inside those trays with screws.

This requires removing the cage entirely, and assembling everything outside of the case.

Remove these screws, keeping them aside for now, then pull out the cage.

Then just slap the tray back in the cage, and skip the next step.

Step 1 of how to install an NVMe SSD: Locate a spare M.2 slot on your motherboard, removing any covers if necessary.

The latter cable should, at the other end, be connected to a SATA port on the motherboard.

How to initialise and create partitions on an SSD / HDD

Disclaimer!

You dont have to worry about this right now, assuming youre still building a PC from scratch.

Step 2 of how to install an NVMe SSD: Insert the SSD sideways into the M.2 slot.

press this or press Enter to pop kick open the tool.

Immediately, Disk Management will detect that a new drive is connected, and will ask to initialise it.

Check “GPT (GUID Partition Table)”, then click OK to initialise.

Step 3 of how to install an NVMe SSD: Secure the SSD in place by pressing it down flat and either tightening the small screw at the opposite end, or rotating the small plastc clip over it.

Next up is creating a partition on the drive so Windows can read and write data to/from it.

Click “Next”.

Step 4:By default, “Format this volume with the follow prefs” should be checked.

A 2.5in SSD’s connection ports, held next to the corresponding power and data cables.

This is what you want.

The File system should be NTFS and Allocation size should be set to Default.

Or just leave it blank!

Step 1 of how to install a SATA SSD: Locate the 2,5in mounting points on your PC chassis and remove any mounting hardware.

The SSD/HDD will still be identifiable from its drive letter.

Finally, verify “Perform a quick format” is checked, then click “Next”.

Step 5:Click “Finish”, then “Format disk” when prompted.

Step 2 of how to install a SATA SSD: attach the SSD to the mounting hardware, using screws if necessary.

And there you have it: one storage drive, ready to serve.

PC storage FAQ

What is a solid state drive?

An SSD is just a storage drive that doesnt include any moving parts.

Step 3 of how to install a SATA SSD: Replace the mounting hardware on the case and attach SATA power and data cables.

Nothing is actuating or spinning, hence “solid state”.

What are the advantages of SSDs over HDDs?

Less waiting, more playing, and this performance gap is going to widen further in games withDirectStoragesupport.

How can I pick the right storage for my gaming PC?

Your primary concern should be: “Will this fit in my PC?”

With the boring techy stuff out of the way, start thinking about capacity.

Step 1 of how to install an internal HDD: Locate the PC case’s drive cage. If it lacks tool-less retention clips, remove the cage so you can affix the HDD to it.

SATA SSDs are still good for budget builds, though attempt to aim higher (i.e.

faster) if your cash situation allows.

Step 2 of how to install an internal HDD: Secure the HDD to the drive cage.

Step 3 of how to install an internal HDD: Replace the drive cage, now containing the hard drive, to its original spot in the PC case.

Step 4 of how to install an internal HDD: Connect SATA power and data cables to the edge of the HDD.
